Brisbane City Council – Innovation Grants Program: About

OVERVIEW

The Innovation Grants Program is a grant of up to $30,000 available to a Brisbane-based creative entrepreneur. It is intended to advance the development of an innovative product, project, collaboration or business idea that demonstrates exceptional levels of cultural, social and economic outcomes for Brisbane.

You are able to apply for this grant as either an individual or as a business for a planned project.

REQUIREMENTS

To be eligible for this grant as an individual, you must:

  • Be a resident of the Brisbane local government area (LGA)

  • Be an Australian citizen OR a permanent resident

  • Have an ABN or nominate an accountable auspice body that has an ABN

To be eligible for this grant as a business, your business must:

  • Be incorporated in the Brisbane LGA OR be an unincorporated organisation auspiced by a business incorporated in Brisbane LGA

  • Have a turnover less than $2 million per year

  • Not be a political organisation

To be eligible for this grant as an individual or business, your project must:

  • Operate in the Brisbane LGA OR directly benefit residents of Brisbane

  • Not have a political purpose

  • Not be completed as part of academic coursework

  • Not have any other financial support from the Council

To be eligible for this grant as an individual or business, the applicant must:

  • Above 18 years old OR above 17 years old with a legal guardian willing to act as a co-signer at the time of application

  • Satisfied the reporting requirements of any Council funding received in the past

​

The grant money cannot be used for:

  • Fundraising ventures, including charitable events

  • Sponsorship, prizes, award ceremonies or competitions

  • General operating expenses that are part of ongoing expenses

  • Capital works, facility maintenance and improvements

  • Debt repayment

  • Retrospective funding

  • General public liability or insurance costs for the individual applicant, organisation or proposed activity

  • Staff wages for permanent staff or for project staff positions that are planned to continue after the project

  • Entertainment for events unless there is a developmental aspect

  • Food and alcohol costs associated with projects or events

APPLICATION PROCESS

You first must make an application that involves personal details, short answer questions, a two year project plan with budget and income forecasts, and letters of support from partners, investor interest and/or mentors.

Phase one is applicant shortlisting. In this phase, your application will be assessed. If it is successful, you will be shortlisted and progress to phase two.

​

Phase two is a question and answer session where you will discuss your program with an assessment committee. It will take place on the 30th of January 2020 and you must attend this session otherwise you will not be eligible for the grant.

​

Phase three is a professional pitch workshop that will provide a professional coach to help you develop your pitch skills for phase four. It will take place on the 10th of March 2020 and you must attend this session otherwise you will not be eligible for the grant.

​

Phase four is a pitch to the panel that will take place on the 24th of March 2020. You must attend this session otherwise you will not be eligible for the grant.

​

Phase five is the final decision on which applicant will be given the grant.
